State minister for Shipping Khalid Mamud Chowdhury appreciated the findings of the study that placed the Matarbari deep sea port on the same channel developed by the ultra-supercritical coal based power plant project with a little modification. Planning minister expressed gratitude to the Japanese government and JICA for their excellent support in the development process of Bangladesh. These infrastructures will lead Bangladesh to becoming a middle income country and in 2041 as a developed country. Planning Minister MA Mannan MP opined that the long and trusted relationship between Japan and Bangladesh has gained momentum during the period of this government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Prime Minister of Japan Shinzo Abe.ĭuring this period Bangladesh has focused on qualitative infrastructure with the Japanese technical and financial corporation. The Government of Bangladesh received a loan amount not exceeding 2,655,000,000 yen from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the implementation of Matarbari Port Development Project. In order to achieve these objectives, a new commercial port and a port connecting road with national highway (N1) at Matarbari, Moheshkhali and Chakoria area in Chittagong Division will be constructed, thereby contributing to create facilities with neighboring countries. The objective of the project is to develop a reliable and low - cost logistic network for seaborne cargo/freight handling and transporting facilities to maintain competitiveness of Bangladeshi products in the global market. This project is an outcome of the concept of "BIG - B" (The Bay of Bengal Industrial Growth Belt) jointly announced by the premiers of Bangladesh and Japan in September 2014. Matarbari Port Development Project is an important Fast Track Project of the Government of Bangladesh. Zafar Alam, project director of Chittagong Port Authority and Naoki Kudo, representative of Japanese company Nippon Koei JV signed the agreement (Engineering Services), while Md Sadequl Islam, project director of Matarbari Port Development Project and Shunji Yoshihara, representative of OC-Global JV signed the agreement for Consultancy Services of Matarbari Port Development Project (RHD Component). Two contracts were signed between Chittagong Port Authority with the Nippon Koei JV and Roads and Highways Department (RHD) with Oriental Consultants Global Company Ltd. Senior officials from the Government, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and the Embassy of Japan were present on the occasion. Mohammed Mezbah Uddin Chowdhury, secretary of the Shipping Ministry chaired the program. Planning Minister MA Mannan MP and State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury virtually joined the ceremony as chief guest and special guest respectively. Bangladesh’s first ever deep sea port, Matarbari port will be made functional by 2025, said the officials at the contract signing ceremony for the Consultancy Services of Matarbari Port Development Project held at Hotel Intercontinental, Dhaka on Wednesday afternoon.
